Understanding Payload

Reference

Payload planning starts with the limit shown for your specific truck when available. Passengers, cargo, added equipment and trailer tongue or pin weight can all consume that allowance, while axle and tire ratings must still be checked separately.

Start With the Truck Label

  • Use the Tire and Loading Information / certification labels for your exact truck
  • If the label gives a maximum combined occupant-and-cargo weight, prefer that number over a generic brochure payload figure
  • GVWR minus actual  vehicle weight can be useful for planning, but factory options and added equipment change the real truck weight
  • Check front and rear GAWR and tire load ratings in addition to total vehicle weight

What Uses Payload

  • Driver and passengers
  • Cargo, tools and equipment in the cab or bed
  • Accessories or modifications that add weight
  • Trailer tongue weight or fifth-wheel/gooseneck pin weight

Before You Load

  • Do not exceed GVWR, either GAWR, tire ratings, hitch ratings or any lower component limit
  • Use actual scale weights when accuracy matters
  • Distribute and secure cargo according to vehicle and cargo-equipment instructions
  • This calculator is a planning aid, not a safety, legal, warranty or insurance determination
